The Panhandle Geological Society (PGS) was founded on April 26, 1926, by geologists and petroleum professionals throughout the Texas Panhandle and surrounding region. Established as a nonprofit educational organization, the Society was created to promote the exchange of geological knowledge, encourage professional development, and foster relationships within the geoscience community.
Since its founding, PGS has grown to include geologists, geophysicists, engineers, landmen, attorneys, students, educators, and others with an interest in geology, energy, and the earth sciences.
In 2026, the Panhandle Geological Society proudly celebrated its 100th Anniversary, marking a century of supporting geoscience professionals and students throughout the Texas Panhandle and surrounding region.
Today, PGS continues to advance its founding mission through technical presentations, educational programs, scholarships, networking opportunities, occasional webinars, and social events. The Society provides a forum for professionals and students to connect, share ideas, and learn from one another while promoting the geological sciences and the responsible development of natural resources.
As a member of the Mid-Continent Section, PGS is an affiliate society of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). Members are encouraged to participate in AAPG and other professional organizations to further their technical knowledge, professional development, and industry connections.
PGS is also committed to investing in the next generation of geoscientists through its scholarship program, which supports deserving students pursuing degrees in geology and related geoscience disciplines.
As the Society enters its second century, PGS remains focused on strengthening the geoscience community through education, professional networking, student outreach, and continued engagement with the energy industry.
